Stanley Park 1897Amber

Two weeks ago I went out for dinner at The Vault in Cloverdale. I have promoted this restaurant with vigor before, but it is truly a great restaurant with consistently good food and great atmosphere and is worthy of strong support. Every time I visit the beer menu seems to grow, often with a number of local craft beers. On this past visit the server mentioned they had Stanley Park Amber Ale on draught – I immediately asked who brewed this unknown mystery ale. Our server, somewhat confused that anyone would care about beer to such a level as to ask who brewed one certain beer, responded with “Stanley Park brewing… I think”. I, embarrassed that I had never heard of said brewery, sheepishly replied “thanks,” and ordered the ale.
The beer turned out to be an impressive well rounded amber ale. Immediately upon arriving at home I took to the internet with haste – in pursuit of learning more about this new brewery found in my own back yard. Sadly, not much was to be found about this mystery ale. After quite some time of searching I came a across Turning Point Brewing Company – the brewers of Stanley Park 1897 Amber Ale. Their website is lacking and I couldn’t find very much information about Turning Point. All I know is that Turning Point is a new brewery (or possibly a brand) built around sustainability, which is quite a trendy work these days, and that they have a wind generator.
I would love to learn more about Turning Point Brewing Company and their beer; if any of you have any info I would love to know more.
Cheers,
Erik

They are a subsidiary of the Marc Anthony Group. Big brewer using a the small, local angle.

Actually, they are a very small craft brewery with the capacity to grow to become a large craft brewery. I have toured the brewery and it is very impressive, they have state of the art brewing equipment that is very efficient on water and energy inputs. Bottles will be available by Christmas, and you are going to start seeing this brand pop up all over the GVRD
Sounds like somebody works for Turning Point…
So which has the right answer -Matt or Max?
The correct answer belongs to Matt. I found this job posting on Marc Anthony’s website for a position at Turning Point Brewery (http://careers2.hiredesk.net/viewjobs/JobDetail.asp?Comp=MAG&sPERS_ID=&TP_ID=1&JB_ID=&PROJ_ID={456872A0-B5EA-47A4-95B3-EF2968415B3B}&LAN=en-US&BackUrl=ViewJobs/Default.asp). Should settle that.
As for the beer, haven’t tried it and can’t imagine I would go out of my way to do so.
Thanks Eric. Having tried the beer myself, its a reasonably good amber ale – miles ahead of Hells Gate beer. But, I can’t say I like the way the Mark Anthony Group tries hide the truth.

I just got a job at turning point , really good people , super nice facility and Ive tried the beer in the bottle and its great
They are indeed part of the Mark Anthony group – who are the biggest producer of wine in BC, Canada. owning mission hill , but also crappy “imported wine cellared in Canada” labels such as Sonora Ranch and Painted Turtle. They also are a large local producer of alcopops / coolers such as Mikes Hard Lemonade and Rockstar.
They ventured into the brewing biz with “Hell’s Gate” Lager and Pale ale last year- aimed at the the inbetween market i.e. to people who want more than the usual Bud and Molson, but perhaps are not ready to go to serious craft brews. The Stanley Park Brewery is a new-ish foray into the craft brew market.
http://www.stanleyparkbrewery.ca/ seems to be the website as I’m not sure whether they will go by this name or the Turning Point brand. We’ll just have to wait and see what else they produce to add to the Amber….

A decent tasting beer is all I have to say. Possibly even one I would tell a buddy about.
..hopefully this Marc Anthony page comes out in this post. If not, have a look here: http://www.markanthony.com/Portfolio.aspx and click on Beer then Canada on the left.

Have had it in the past and just bought a six pack. Tastes to me a little like GI beers but that’s the Vancouver water thing which has always been a bugaboo for greater Vancouver beers, imho. Gotta go to Victoria for a good fresh brew.
As to the ownership and Mark Anthony trying to hide it – Well, isn’t that what they all do when they get big? Molson – Granvile Island/ Creemore – there is no marketing to connect them, we’re supposed to be duped and when found out, they are supposed to be embarrassed I guess.

Uh… Vancouver has some of the best brewing water in the world. It’s soft. Soft = good. If you have any issues with brews produced by local breweries don’t go blaming the water. I agree that Victoria has some fine beer but I’d bet some of their fine brewers wish they had some good van water coming in on their main line.

Can anyone tell me where the brewery is?
The brewery is on Annacis island right close to the sewage treatment plant. Their address is 401 Fraser View Place, Delta, British Columbia, Canada.

I work for Turing Point Brewery/Marc Anthony Group. Turing Point is the Beer/RTD division of the Marc Anthony Group. Focus is on company beer and coolers such as Hells Gate, Stanley Park, Palm Bay, Mikes Hard, ect. As we are a privately held company, owned by a local Vancouver man, most of the company’s information is not available to the public. So you will have a very hard time finding anything on the internet. We are Canada’s first sustainable brewery, and use a industry leading, cutting edge, 5 vessel brewing system.
By all means, please do set the record straight. We’d be happy to post your side of the story.

[...] Stanley Park 1897 Amber [...]
The amber ale is a high quality European style craft beer. their new Noble pilsner is also a terrific brew. Definitely the best BC craft brew ‘lager’ that i have tried. i used to be partial to R&B’s Bohemia Lager but it varied in consistency from keg to keg. The noble pilsner is incredibly smooth and when poured properly gives a beautiful creamy froth with perfect lacing.
If you like well poured draught beers, visit ‘Slainte, by the pier’ on Marine Drive in White Rock where you get Dublin quality Guinness, both Stanley Park brews, Red roof cider from the Okanagan and currently Russell’s Honey lager.

It is 2-2 in the Canucks – Sharks game to go to the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals and I am working through some Stanley Park 1897 Amber. Absolutely better.
